This first unit of the year, we tried something a bit different. We used blendspace and coursesites to complete the tasks in this unit in a specific order. Click on the "Birth of a Rock PBL" below to access the lessons in blendspace. Extra Resources are Listed below.
Birth of a Rock PBL
DRIVING QUESTION: How do Earth's processes impact different rock's properties so that we have ecological succession?
END PRODUCT: Students will: (option 1) create a 7-10 minute video teaching about the birth of a rock or (option 2) design a game teaching about the birth of a rock. Both options will need to be sure to include earth's processes and how those rocks eventually develop into soil.
BIRTH OF A ROCK EXTRA RESOURCES:
Important Vocabulary for this Unit:PLATE TECTONICS: Tectonics, Continental Drift Theory, Seafloor Spreading Theory, Fault, Subduction Zone, Volcano, Earthquake
ROCK CYCLE: Weathering, Erosion, Fossil, Deposition, Compaction, Magma, Sedimentary, Igneous, Metamorphic

WHAT is SOIL? PBL
DRIVING QUESTION: How can student-scientists design the soil-level of a living roof model so that they can demonstrate how soil sustains life and their role in sustaining it?
END PRODUCT: Students will use their knowledge of rocks and soil to develop the soil-level of a living roof model. Students will create a presentation (live, prezi/piktochart or published video) of how they took soils and rocks to create the soil level.

What are two ways in which carbon and nitrogen cycles are linked? 4.) What are two ways in which nitrogen and phosphorus cycles are linked? 5.) What are two ways in which carbon and phosphorus cycles are linked? 6.) What are two ways each, that the sulfur cycles are linked to the , phosphorus, nitrogen and carbon cycles? |
