We are in Chapter 12 from your textbook. This is a good time to read the chapter, answer the review questions to be ready for the exam. It will be after Christmas break. We will cover land use (agriculture) first, then touch on water use.
Urban Heat Islands, LEED, etc.
As we move from population into land use, we need to understand Urban Heat Islands and what LEED is. To help: http://www.nsf.gov/news/special_reports/greenrevolution/greenroofs.html
What are some land uses that can utilize existing structures and retrofitting them for the future? How can you improve Fort Worth? Ideas worth thinking about....
We will also be doing a project about LEED over Christmas Break (it will be due the January 21 (new semester))
Below is an info sheet to help you understand what LEED is and what becoming LEED certified means. I also included the instructions/rubric for the project and the "options" sheet to help you get started.

For all soil composition and physical/chemical properties-refer back to the Earth Systems tab (near the bottom). This unit, we utilized materials from "Nourishing the Planet" from the Nutrients for Life foundation (https://www.nutrientsforlife.org/) **this is also where we played the "game"/case study in the computer lab. **Also: S,C,H,N,O,P** Below are some additional reminders:

Here is the link to Monsanto : http://www.monsanto.com/pages/default.aspx Feel free to explore their pages to help you make informed decisions. I recommend coming here after reading the articles above... (mainly because, this company is for-profit, and their side of the story could be biased.... at least, if I was selling you my product, I might be a bit biased. Something to think about. They are not the only company with GMO's, and its not the only thing they do.... but it is a name you hear in the headlines a lot.
Grow It!

Think about it:
Do you like the agricultural stuff we have covered? Do you want to learn more about growing your own crops, animals, plants? Maybe your interest lies in floral arranging or public speaking... Did you know that the FFA program can be brought to our school? Petition the counselors and administration to bring Agricultural Education classes to Carter and we can bring the FFA to us!
